I had already planned to clean out the fridge today. As for the pantry – mine is well organized, but I have a hard time training kids to put things back where they belong. Any suggestions?

Depends on the ages of the kids, although I think simple is best no matter what the age.
For mine I would do something like: make a small list of simple illustrations (ex: a bag of chips to represent Snacks). I would make the image a bright color and then put a piece of the same color tape where the Snacks go in the pantry. I’d tape the list somewhere easily visible to the kids. That might make it easier for them to know where to put things.

Getting them to actually make the effort to put stuff away – I just either ask mine to or say “hey it looks like you’ve forgotten something” and after a few seconds of their befuddlement I’ll nod toward the things that they’ve left out.

I’m curious how Jessica has handled this in her house.

We are a work in progress. LOL

I’ll be cleaning out my fridge today. I’m going to re-organize and switch where some things usually go.
Which means for the next few weeks I’ll be reaching for things that aren’t where they usually are – it will be hilarious and frustrating. Haha

Does anyone have some ideas on how to have a minimalist pantry but still be stocked? I cannot handle having a lot of “stuff”/clutter. I definitely have my fair share of stuff/clutter and I’m always working on getting rid of stuff. But if you listen to the news, etc, everyone is telling you to stock up and stockpile food. I started doing that during the pandemic but it becomes overwhelming. I’m the kind of person who cannot go on Pintrest because I can’t handle all the info at once. It’s visually overwhelming to me and makes me freeze up.

So, how much is enough to be prepared but not overwhelming and still use the products before they expire? I know this will differ between people, but any ideas are appreciated.

I’m trying to find this balance too! I like not having to go to the grocery but I get overwhelmed easily by too much stuff. After some reflection, I have 3 categories of food storage. Perishables, which need to be restocked every week or two (milk, eggs, fresh produce). Pantry staples, which I try to keep on hand but not buy more until I am low/have one extra (baking supplies, but also things like canned tomatoes, pasta, soy sauce, dried beans). And long term storage, which is mostly in the freezer, of things I buy local/seasonal (meat, veggies, fruit). My next focus goal, for June (ie after daughter’s wedding!!!), is to evaluate what we need in food storage and then automate the purchases as much as possible so that we don’t run out and I don’t have to shop any more than necessary.

By the way, you’re not alone. I can use Pinterest *if* I have something specific I am searching for (note to self: look for hairstyle ideas for wedding next week). Otherwise I had to delete social media because it was visually overwhelming/too much information I didn’t need.

I found that decanting things out of their glaring packaging has helped me get a better feel for what I have in my pantry. I bought big mason jars at the start of the pandemic (which was difficult- because a lot of other people had the same idea!) and lined up my rice, dried fruits and flours so that I could see how much I had.

Angie, I like the 3 categories idea. That’s kind of how my kind works too. That way I’m not looking at one big category of FOOD. It’s FOOD, with 3 subcategories. 😃 I could write that out on paper with Food at the top and then 3 lines branching off that are Perishables, Pantry Staples, and Long Term storage. Then list my items under each heading!! Thanks!!!!!!!!

So glad I’m not the only one who gets overwhelmed by Pinterest type stuff!!!

I hope your daughter has a wonderful wedding!! Congratulations!! Praying everything goes smoothly and you find a hairstyle on Pinterest you like 😉😀

Yes Jenn!!!!! I have always dreamed of having all my stuff in clear containers!! It looks SO nice!! I really need to start with cereal boxes. I would love to get those in the containers first. Never did it because I felt it would be expensive. I’ve looked at the Tupperware brand and love them, but expensive. Thanks for responding!!
